  • Messy Me!

    Ages: Age 4 - Kindergarten

    Come prepared for messy fun every day! Imagine the drips and splatters and gooey gloppiness of painting upside down, splatter painting or plastering! Create beautiful paintings, prints, sculptures and more, while getting very messy in the process. These are the kinds of projects you might not get to do at home very often.

  • Stepping Stones and Garden Art

    Ages: 1st - 3rd Grade

    Create mosaic tiles, decorative planters and more as we make beautiful artwork for the garden or patio. Campers, you are encouraged to bring broken ceramic dishes, pottery or other embellishments to add a personal touch to your work.

  • American Girls: You and Your Doll

    Ages: 1st - 3rd Grade

    Bring your American Girl doll (or My Twinn) and get ready to have a blast. Design more clothes and accessories for your dolls, and create other crafts throughout the week. Read their stories and author your own, about you and your doll. Dress like your doll and we’ll have an American Girls party on Friday.

  • Sketchbook Art

  • ARTScetera: Pottery on the Wheel

    Ages: 7th - 9th Grade

    Make functional or sculptural objects with earthenware clay. Approximately half of the camp time is spent on the potters wheel. Working with a professional potter, you will explore the unique qualities of clay that make it so much fun to manipulate. All projects will be fired in the kiln and need to be picked up at a later date. Additional $10 materials fee for this camp.

  • Pottery: Handmade by Me

    Make useful or decorative objects with real clay, real pottery tools and the best tools of all, your hands!  Pottery handmade by you will have a special place in your home for years to come. You will hand build your objects and may also enjoy a wheel throwing demonstration. All projects will be fired in the kiln and need to be picked up at a later date.   • ARTScetera: Fine Art: Drawing
    Course Number: 12PM0104
    Ages: 7th - 9th Grade

    Build your drawing skills by learning a variety of drawing techniques and exercises through the week. Students will explore charcoal and pencil and finish off the week in color using pastels. Explore and expand on drawing skills, value, lighting, line and composition. Draw from still lifes; interesting objects arranged for visual interest, so you can learn to draw what your eyes see and better coordinate hand eye movement. Quick drawing exercises allow you to see progression in your drawing abilities daily as you work toward final drawing(s). This is a great foundation for any future fine arts opportunity.

  • Trash to Treasure

    Be creatively kind to the environment. Use the kind of stuff we usually thow away to make colorful and useful creations like mosaics, sculptures, jewelry and more. Please bring us your trash - even if you don't take this camp! We need caps, lids, glass, mirrors, plates and more for our eco-friendly art.

  • Young Photographers

    Get familiar with the basics of digital photography this week. Discover the important role composition and lighting play in good photographs and do some basic digital photo-retoucing and manipulation as well. Please bring your own camera and blank memory card. Each teen gets the chance to develop their individual artistic skills and showcase their talent in a staged performance on Friday.

  • Wood and Metal Combo Camp

    Ages: 4th - 6th Grade

    Work with soft wood and metals using simple, basic tools, you will safely learn the basics of working in 3D. Once you know how to control or manipulate materials, you will be able to design and form your own individualized creations. Some projects may also include creative finishes.  Make both funtional and art or craft projects. Goggles provided or bring your own if you have them. $10 additional materials fee for this camp.

  • ARTscetera: Mod Bod Pods (Modern Body Pods)

    Create huge habitats inspired by animal homes like bird nests or bee hives, "pods" that our human size bodies to fit into. These will be large scale sculptures that will enhance that CCArts landscape and make a fun escape for campers throughout the summer. Additional $10 materials fee for this camp.

  • Creative Playhouse

    Pretend to be somebody else and act out your original stories on the stage. Role play, create theater crafts, develop listening and self-expression skills and have fun with new friends. Show off your talents on stage for family and friends during the Friday Fun Finale.

  • Drawing and Painting

    Create impressive drawings and paintings of animals, cartoons, still lifes, landscapes, people or abstract designs while you find special qualities about each material you try.     Get to know the art of Printmaking, an ancient tradition with modern applications. Carve and cut your own designs into a printing plate or block using traditional carving tools, then ink it up with colors of your choice and print your original piece of art work. Explore traditional printmaking techniques such as linoleum and woodblock cuts, and use the printing press in this camp.

    Combine your love for fashion and art to design and create one-of-a-kind accessories you can actually use. Create our own handbags, sunglasses holders, ipod and cell phone holders. We will also make necklaces using professional beading tools and materials, and make one of a kind fashion t-shirts. Throughout the week, make as many accessories as your imagination can create. Use fabric and felt and decorate items with gems, lace, ribbon, fur, paint, buttons and more!

    Jam with a real pro in a real rock band who has opened for national acts and performed with famous rockers. He will share some of his experience with you and give you a taste of what it's like to put your band together. Guitar, bass and keyboard players, drummers and singers are all welcome!   • Sock Monkeys and Muppets

    Not your Grandma's sock monkeys! These are one-of-a-kind creations with personality!  Bring 2 pair of (clean) socks or choose from our collection and create a unique sock monkey or monkey puppet (Muppet) that is sure to become a keepsake item. Maybe you will want to name your monkey or make up a story about his or her adventures. Go Bananas!

  • ARTScetera: Realistic Art in Color

    Ages: 7th - 9th Grade

    Explore foundation drawing and painting skills using a variety of color media throughout the week from oil pastels to acrylics. Students will start day 1 of camp drawing in black and white, and concentrate on learning to draw what "they see", using line, and understanding value. The rest of the week, students will explore color media while focusing on a variety of subjects in their art from still life and working from photographs of the students choice featuring landscapes, animals, and more. Fine Art: Drawing, offered Week 1, is not required but is an excellent foundation that will greatly enhance your experience in this camp.

  • Become an Illustrator

    Explore the world of illustration and a variety of media such as oil pastel, paint and clay!  We will look at and be inspired by illustrations on book covers, cd covers, in magazines and toy figurines. We will write and illustrate our own pop up books and learn to think “outside of the box” to get our imagination going in different ways.

Using diverse materials throughout the week, you will have a different 3D art experience each day so you can think outside the box of 3D design.

  • From Red Clay Blobs to Garden Planters

    Let your imagination take control as you create a unique red clay "blob"! Using newspaper as a support, students will work with slabs of clay to create a very unusual garden planter that can be filled with hens and chicks or a whimsical lantern that can light your patio with a candle.     Make keen observations of animals in natural settings at the Delaware Museum of Natual History on Monday. Back in the pottery studio at CCArts, work from your reference sketches and photographs to create life like animal sculptures with textures and features of the animal you choose.     What did Goldilocks have to do with the Big Bad Wolf, did Rapunzel meet up with the Seven Dwarfs, and did the Three Little Pigs really go the ball with Cinderella.?  These are just some of the fractured fairy tales that our actors will get to explore and create their own versions of other fractured fairy tales to perform. What a fun way to improvise as they perform their unique tales on Friday for family and camp.

    Impress your friends with these high-energy moves! This is the standard dance form for music videos and concerts. Get in on the act and help choreograph the performance for the end of the week. Just bring energy and attitude. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in. (no flip-flops!)

  • ARTScetera: Figure Drawing

    Ages: 7th - 9th Grade

    You asked for it!  Figure Drawing for teen artists! Working with a professional artist and live model, you will learn how to draw the human body more accurately using traditional charcoal and chalk media. Your model will wear a bathing suit or leotard so that you can see the skeleton and muscles work together. Once you are able to capture the proportions in a variety of natural poses, it will be much easier for you to draw human figures in any pose and wearing any clothing.

    If you liked getting messy Week 1, or even if you didn't get messy with us then, join this camp for even more, even messier fun every day! If you like to get gooey, gloppy, drippy, slimy, splattery and smeary, this is the place for you!  Create beautiful paintings, prints, sculptures or more, while getting very messy in the process. These are the kinds of projects you might not get to do at home very often.

  • Take the Stage!

    Young actors will learn the art of acting as we focus on developing a believable performance. Campers will explore all aspects of a stage performance from vocal projection to stage movement, stage terminology and character development to interaction with others.   • Deeply Creepy Sculpture for BOYS

    No Girls Allowed (except the teacher). Boys ONLY will have a blast making gooey, grimy, creepy, frightfully fun and otherwise cool creations in an exciting environment that celebrates your unique enthusiasm for artful stuff. Explore a variety of 3D media like clay, polymer clay, salt dough and slime.

  • ARTScetera: Dark Sparks, a.k.a. "Art Light"

    Can you draw without drawing tools? Paint without painting materials? Yes, you can! Explore light and dark as creative art tools and discover how important they are in all artwork. Use light sources like flashlights, clip lights, lamps and natural sunlight to create silhouettes, shadow puppets and camera obscura.  Build sculptures from found objects like cereal boxes, water bottles and other junk that will cast a shadow to reveal a detailed vignette, awesome surprises for your viewers.

Instructor Biographies

Denise August teaches art at A.I. DuPont Middle School. An artist her entire life, she has done everything from painting to weaving and more. Watercolor is her favorite medium.

Rachel Barton has appeared in numerous theatre and television productions, commercials and film. Her goal is to inspire and motivate performing art students by creating a fun and challenging learning environment.

Lauren Charles has a BS in early Childhood Education from the University of Delaware and has taught at the Independance School, the YWCA Preschool and area daycare programs. She enjoys exploring the arts and encouraging creativity in children of all ages.

Amanda Conner shares her love for art with students at Kennett Middle School. She grew up in Unionvile and studied Art Education at Moravian College. She enjoys teaching and creating a wide variety of art media.

Jennifer Domal has a BFA in Studio Arts concentrated Sculpture and Crafts from West Chester University. Her interest in art began literally at the kitchen table with her mother, making traditional folk art and fine art. Sharing her passion for art with children is one of her greatest pleasures.

Ann Ferron is a favorite art teacher at C.F. Patton Middle School in Unionville where she has taught for over 25 years. She loves clay, exploring art, nurturing young artists and the natural world of the Brandywine Valley.

April Higgins was the 2009 Teacher of the Year at Skyline Middle School, and has enjoyed teaching locally for ten years. In her spare time, she loves to craft, bake and decorate extraordinary cakes and cupcakes.

Kristen Margiotta received her BFA in Visual Communications/Illustration from the University of Delaware. Teaching children and adult classes at CCArts since 2004, she also exhibits and sells handmade merchandise and illustrations and released her first illustrated children's book, Better Homes and Gardens, in 2009.

Tony Mowen has been a professional musician for 17 years, performing with nationally known artists Les Paul, Mark FRarner (Grand Funk), Vince Martell (Vanilla Fudge), Paul Cullen (Bad Company), and Pete Best, the Beatles original drummer. Drums are his main instrument: he also plays solo and is lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist with the Big Jangle in Philadelphia. Tony has a BA in Communications from Wilmington University.

Jen Mrozek has taught art for over 12 years in Delaware and Boston. She has a BFA in Painting and Drawing and a MA in Theology and the Arts. She currently enjoys teaching students at the Independance School in Newark, DE.

Shannon O'Brien has performed with the Longwood Dance Company and in musical theater productions, workshops and performances. She has taught young dancers at both LPA and CCArts. She enthusiastically shares her talent with SAGO campers.

Jenna Schuck holds a BA in Studio Art from West Chester University with a focus on Printmaking, Painting and Photography. She exhibits her work locally and is a founding member of the Renaissance Academy, which strives to nurture future artists in our local community.

Val Schulte Val's favorite playthings as a child were crayons, markers and glue. She was a master doodle-marker and avid scrap-booker. Val shares her love for creativity in paintings, mixed media and collage at SAGO.

Cheryl Weichsel has been an Elementary Art Teacher in Red Clay for over 20 years and an involved arts person since the 70s. She loves to explore the arts with her students and enjoys the dynamics of interweaving art productions with other aspects of the world around us.

Bruce Zabel has taught a variety of art classes to children and adults for over 20 years in schools, community and art centers. Bruce holds a BA in Graphic Design and MFA from the University of Delaware.
